Interest in 'The Odyssey' Diminishes Amid Race-Swapping Discussion

Currently, a company called quorum, which tracks movie enthusiasm, indicates a significant drop in interest for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Odyssey. This decline is notable, especially compared to the excitement surrounding Scary Movie 6, which has enjoyed a 26-year legacy.

For some perspective, Toy Story 5 has a solid interest score of 62. In contrast, Odyssey recently fell from 54 to just 46 points. This places it on par with Information Release Date and Supergirl, both of which also show weak tracking.

According to World of Reel, it’s concerning when a well-known release like this sees a decline in audience interest, as successful films often depend on maintaining audience enthusiasm as the release date approaches.

Exactly.

While Odyssey is hovering around a 46 interest level, it’s still not ideal to watch potential viewership fade so close to the July 17 release date. Typically, this is when studios increase advertising spending to boost overall interest.

So what led to this decline?

In my opinion, there are two main factors…

Firstly, judging by the released footage, the film doesn’t look very promising. I have immense respect for Christopher Nolan; he’s a brilliant filmmaker with a knack for original stories. Yet, despite that, there’s hardly any excitement surrounding this project.

Then, there’s the surrounding controversy regarding race and gender swapping…

As a Gen X individual, I admire talented actors, regardless of their background. For instance, I grew up watching Eartha Kitt as Catwoman and appreciate diverse casting when done with respect. But I also understand why some might feel exhausted by what seems like constant racial pandering, particularly towards changes aimed at diminishing established white icons.

And then there’s the potential casting issue…

There are rumors that Elliot Page might portray Achilles in Nolan’s $250 million film. If true, that would certainly stir debate. Are transgender individuals the strongest warriors in mythology? Such a choice could be seen as pandering.

The secrecy surrounding Elliot Page’s role has only intensified speculation about a possible Achilles casting.

This situation has a distinct whiff of “wokeness,” which is often not a good sign for box office performance.

Nolan has built his career on crafting compelling stories, and it’d be disheartening to see his reputation entwined with the latest cultural trends. His celebrated brand seems to be losing luster.

As for Steven Spielberg’s Information Release Date, the lack of enthusiasm isn’t surprising. He has directed ten films in the past two decades, but not many have resonated. Besides Lincoln and Bridge of Spies, the rest have largely fallen flat. Spielberg’s former status as a box office draw feels like a thing of the past.

Regarding Supergirl, you can delve more into that elsewhere.
