Paxton wins against Cornyn in GOP primary runoff in Texas

Texas Senate Primary Results

Ken Paxton, the Texas Attorney General, emerged victorious in a tense Republican primary runoff against incumbent Senator John Cornyn on Tuesday night.

The race concluded with Paxton securing 62.5% of the total votes, totaling 503,591, while Cornyn received 37.5%, which equates to 302,591 votes. This decisive outcome marked a significant shift in a campaign that had become quite competitive, particularly as Paxton saw increased support following an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

In their earlier primary on March 3, Cornyn had a narrow lead over Paxton, with 43% to 41%. However, neither candidate could achieve the necessary 50% majority, leading to the runoff.

Trump’s backing of Paxton—a figure he referred to as a “true MAGA warrior”—highlights a strategic move by the former President to challenge Republican members who may not align closely with his ideals. Paxton, a firm conservative, has positioned his campaign closely with the MAGA movement as he seeks to serve his third term.

On the other hand, Cornyn has been a long-serving member of the Senate since 2002 and has rich legislative experience advocating for over 31 million Texans. He held the role of Republican Whip from 2013 to 2019, and his previous positions include serving as a district judge and a member of the Texas Supreme Court.

The candidate who wins this runoff will face Democratic state Representative James Talarico in the upcoming midterm elections this November. This Texas Senate race is particularly vital as Democrats see a chance to flip the seat, influenced by changing demographic trends among voters.

There has been a noted increase of 1.7 million individuals eligible to vote, especially within Hispanic, Latino, and Asian communities. In the previous election, Trump also made notable gains among Latino voters. Tuesday’s runoff served as a critical assessment of Trump’s influence within the GOP following the earlier primary results.
