Abner Uribe’s Controversial Celebration
Abner Uribe was in quite the mood on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t exactly in line with his manager’s wishes.
The Brewers’ right-hander insisted that his antics were meant to defend his teammates.
After striking out Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson to wrap up the eighth inning, with the score at 6-0 in favor of Milwaukee, Uribe pulled off a celebration reminiscent of the famous “Suck It” move from the WWF’s D-Generation X. This, of course, did not sit well with everyone.
Post-game, Uribe alleged that Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol had previously indicated he wanted to retaliate against some Brewers players.
Despite a strong performance, including a couple of quick outs in the first inning, Uribe allowed a walk and a single before facing Burleson, who tried to contest a low slider but struck out instead. The call stood, and Uribe celebrated, raising eyebrows across the field.
Milwaukee’s captain, Pat Murphy, did not hold back his criticism following the game. He expressed his disapproval directly to reporters, questioning Uribe’s actions during such a lopsided game. “That’s simply not acceptable,” he stated, baffled by the whole situation. “What were we thinking? Was there something more behind it?”
Murphy, who claims to admire Uribe, made it clear he disapproves of such displays. He speculated that Uribe might face disciplinary action from the league.
Meanwhile, Uribe acknowledged, via an interpreter, that he owed his teammates and coaching staff an apology, admitting the celebration was improper. Yet, he maintained that Marmol appeared to provoke the Brewers’ players, which spurred him on during his celebration. He mentioned an unspecified incident before the game that influenced his actions.
“I really don’t think it’s professional for them to gesture like that,” Uribe reflected. “And it’s not right for our players to be anxious about how the game will unfold.”
Herrera, who had joined Uribe in the celebration, labeled the chop as “rude” but expressed hope that the Cardinals would address the matter internally. The two teams are set to face each other again on Wednesday, adding another layer of tension to the rivalry.
