The Boys’ Controversial Ending: A Reflection on Power
The Amazon Prime Video series “The Boys” has made headlines by portraying its main antagonist, Homelander, in a manner that seems to mock former President Donald Trump, culminating in his death during the series finale.
Show creator Eric Kripke aimed to illustrate how “strong men” can reveal their cowardice when they lose their hold on power. In this pivotal scene, Homelander is shown in a vulnerable state—crouched down, in tears, making desperate pleas for mercy.
Commentator John Doyle explained his interpretation of Homelander as, perhaps unexpectedly, a rather anxious character who struggles with insecurity in positions of authority. He noted that the ending serves to undermine the perceived strength of powerful figures.
Doyle elaborated that the writers intended to convey a message about the illegitimacy of authority held by supposed strong men. He criticized the show as being, in essence, a form of “murder porn” that expresses disdain for patriots and ordinary Americans, portraying the creators as excessively liberal and propagandistic.
However, it appears that this approach didn’t resonate as intended.
Doyle suggested that while the writers meant to exploit what he terms “murder porn,” viewers often flipped the narrative, utilizing the show’s themes to counter the creators’ political stance. For example, while Homelander represents evil in liberal eyes, right-leaning audiences began to embrace him as a patriotic symbol, sharing related memes on social platforms.
He noted that any attempt to create art that vilifies those on the right often backfires, as audiences tend to connect with those characters, citing Rorschach from “Watchmen” as another instance of this phenomenon. “Rorschach has become a fan favorite,” he said.
Doyle expressed a sense of satisfaction in seeing works used against their creators, adding that it’s amusing how easily the creators’ own ideas can be turned on them without their consent.
