Trump’s Surprising Defense of Chinese Students in U.S. Universities
In a recent discussion with Sean Hannity, President Donald Trump caught many supporters off guard by expressing his support for the presence of Chinese students in American universities. He argued that excluding these students would significantly harm the American higher education system.
Trump remarked, “To say we don’t want students? That’s a very disrespectful statement to our country. If that happens, they’ll just start building universities everywhere in China.” He further added, “If you want to see American universities fade away, then just take away 500,000 students.”
This unexpected stance left some of his allies, including Blaze TV Host Pat Gray and executive producer Keith Marinak, feeling perplexed. Gray stated incredulously, “We’re completely reliant on Chinese students. Without them, our universities would face a crisis. Seriously, think about it.”
He contrasted Trump’s claims with those of past political figures. “Who are you, Joe Biden?” he said jokingly. “That’s more like something he or Barack Obama would say, not Donald Trump.” Marinak added, “The president’s primary points seem to be that it’s insulting and schools might go broke.” He suggested that Trump might not be understanding the broader picture.
Gray challenged Trump’s assertion, stating, “It’s simply not true that American universities would crumble without those 500,000 students. That’s a rather new trend if we’re being honest. And 500,000 students spread over, what, 15,000 universities? It’s not as drastic as it sounds.”
The president further claimed that while top-tier schools could withstand such changes, “the lower-tier ones” wouldn’t fare as well. Gray countered, “Actually, it could be the opposite. The more elite schools like Harvard and Princeton might struggle more, considering their high percentages of Asian students.” He suggested that these institutions might actually be reducing the admission of Asian students due to their substantial numbers.
