Texas Primary Run-off Results: Galindo Defeated by Garcia

Democratic candidate Maureen Galindo has lost her primary run-off for a U.S. House seat in Texas, following considerable backlash over her recent comments about “American Zionists” that many have labeled antisemitic.

In the run-off held on Tuesday, Johnny Garcia, who previously lagged behind Galindo in the March primary, emerged victorious. This win positions him as the Democratic nominee for Congressional District 35, which serves areas stretching from San Antonio to Austin.

The election drew notable attention after Galindo’s controversial statements, which created outrage even within her own party. She had posted on Instagram that, if elected, she would ensure legislation defining support for Zionism as antisemitic, claiming that “Zionists are harming the Semites.”

Galindo’s post mentioned plans to convert the Karnes ICE Detention Center into a facility for imprisoning “American Zionists” and former ICE officers connected to human trafficking, continuing her inflammatory rhetoric.

Following her comments, Democratic leaders swiftly condemned her actions and reevaluated their support for her campaign. They alleged that Republican interference played a role in the outcome of the election.

Garcia expressed appreciation for his supporters on X (formerly Twitter) after his victory, stating, “Tonight TX Democrats showed that we won’t stand for hate.” He declared his honor in becoming the official Democratic nominee for Texas’ 35th Congressional District.

The district has recently experienced redistricting, which is believed to give Republicans an advantage in the upcoming general election. Garcia is set to face off against Republican candidate Carlos De La Cruz, who also won his run-off against State Representative John Lujan. Notably, both candidates have received endorsements from high-profile figures; De La Cruz from former President Donald Trump and Lujan from Governor Greg Abbott.

With the political landscape continuously evolving, it will be interesting to see how these dynamics play out as the November elections approach.
