Heat Takes a Toll at Roland Garros
This week, the soaring temperatures in Paris are having an impact on the tennis players competing at Roland Garros.
Jakub Mensik, the latest casualty, experienced a dramatic incident on Wednesday.
The Czech player, currently ranked 26th globally, engaged in an intense five-set match against Argentina’s Mariano Navone, culminating in a nail-biting tie-break in the final set.
It’s just a terrible scene about Meng-sik…
Mensik edged out a win with scores of 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (11). However, after a grueling 4 minutes and 41 seconds of play following his victory, he collapsed on the clay.
The 20-year-old seemed to suffer from a leg cramp and couldn’t get back on his feet. Navone approached to extend his hand, while the referee arrived a few moments later.
At one point, Mensik attempted to sit up, grimacing in pain, before quickly lying back down and signaling for medical assistance.
“The game is over. Now help this guy!” said John McEnroe during the broadcast, visibly concerned.
Although there was a delay, medical personnel eventually arrived to assess Mensik, who was likely experiencing heat stroke.
A bag of ice was brought for his forehead, but he remained on the ground for approximately 10 minutes before getting up.
When offered a wheelchair by the medical team, he declined and, covered in clay, left the court under his own power, following one of the most unforgettable matches of his career.
Mensik now faces a tight timeline to recover before his next match against world No. 8 Alex de Minaur on Friday.
He finally stands. Leave the court. Let’s hope he can continue to compete in tournaments.
In fact, it wasn’t just Mensik facing heat-related difficulties. Earlier in the week, Casper Ruud and his first-round opponent Roman Safiulin dealt with hydration issues.
Ruud, who won his match 6-2, 7-6(5), 5-7, 0-6, 6-2, reported feeling “really dizzy” during the fourth set, describing it as “walking around like a zombie.”
During the final set, he felt completely drained and in dire need of a boost.
Ruud, ranked 15th in the world, is set to face Hamad Medjedovic on Wednesday.
