Husband Doug Preston dies and wife Lucy is hurt after their home explodes in a murder-suicide attempt.

Michigan Explosion Linked to Murder-Suicide Plot

A devastating explosion leveled a home in Plainfield Township, Michigan, resulting in the death of Doug Preston, 62, and severely injuring his wife, Lucy, 61. Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential murder-suicide.

The explosion occurred around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, and Lucy was rescued from the debris. The investigation into the cause is ongoing.

Alpine Township Fire Chief Jeremy Kelly mentioned that a natural gas leak might have played a role in the explosion, but Kent County Deputy Sheriff Brian Muir suggested there was intent behind the act. “This is believed to be a domestic-related situation… and we think the fire was deliberately set by the husband as part of a murder-suicide plan,” he said.

According to court documents, Lucy had initiated divorce proceedings against Doug in March, following complaints about her spending habits. The couple was set to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary that Sunday.

Their home was reportedly bound by mutual restraining orders, restricting them from causing property damage or making significant financial decisions without court approval. This situation complicates the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Neighbors described the couple as having a strong bond just months prior. Lucy had confided in her longtime neighbor, Jerry Orent, about the marital issues. Orent expressed disbelief and sorrow, stating, “Nothing is worth killing yourself or killing others. If you have a problem, please seek help.” She also questioned how someone could think that ending one’s life was a solution, expressing sadness over the whole scenario.

After the explosion, numerous calls flooded in to report the incident, describing a massive fireball erupting from the home. Neighbor Kurt Dutrizak recalled seeing debris scattered around and hearing cries for help.

Neighbors bravely rushed to the scene. Tim Johnson and 17-year-old Mandrell Bryant managed to pull Lucy from the wreckage, even as others expressed concern for their safety. Bryant noted that he ran toward the chaos despite his mother’s protests.

Recovery efforts were delayed due to intense heat, and Doug’s body was found later in the day. Lucy suffered severe fourth-degree burns and is currently on a ventilator, facing a long journey of recovery, according to her friend Marzanna Butrin.

Lucy, who earned the title of “Queen Busia” in 2023 for her community work, had founded a charity named Busia’s Boutique to support families in need. Friends describe her as selfless and devoted to her community, dedicated to making a positive impact.

In previous remarks, Lucy highlighted how her husband aided her in turning her charity vision into a reality, stating that many rallied behind the cause, volunteering their time and resources.
