Serena Williams Makes a Comeback
Serena Williams is making a return to tennis. According to a report from The Telegraph, she has applied for a wild card to participate in doubles at the Queen’s Club, which is gearing up for Wimbledon.
The event kicks off on June 8, following the French Open, as the tennis circuit transitions to grass courts—an area where Williams has enjoyed considerable success in the past.
This news was first hinted at during the Served podcast by tennis writers Jon Wertheim and Andy Roddick, where they discussed her potential comeback.
Wertheim mentioned that Williams, who is 44 now, plans to partner with Victoria Mboko, a promising 19-year-old player from Canada.
Roddick expressed his surprise if she didn’t return, stating the excitement around her potential comeback is palpable.
Interestingly, Williams had previously re-entered the ITA doping protocol, allowing her to compete again as of February. Initially, she downplayed any thoughts of returning.
In December, she tweeted about not wanting to go back, humorously commenting on the chaotic wildfires. And in February, during an interview on TODAY, she reacted incredulously to questions about returning to competition, emphasizing that she was simply enjoying her life.
Now, however, it appears her comeback is indeed unfolding, and discussions suggest she may not only enter doubles at the Queen’s Club but also consider singles at Wimbledon, where she has claimed seven out of her 23 Grand Slam titles.
Wertheim noted that there’s been quite a buzz regarding her return, adding that it’s all shrouded in a bit of mystery. He remarked on the excitement and how things appear to be gaining momentum.
Last seen at the 2022 US Open, where she lost in the third round, Williams seems to have been on a personal journey since her retirement, sharing that she lost about 31 pounds while promoting a weight loss drug, Ro, which her husband, Alexis Ohanian, is involved with.
