Sen. Ruben Gallego Establishes Legal Defense Fund Amid Ethics Investigation
Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona has filed paperwork to set up a legal defense fund in light of an ethics investigation related to sexual misconduct allegations.
Following this, Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna from Florida raised accusations against him, alleging inappropriate behavior. These claims, brought to light in April, have been denied by the Arizona Democratic Party. Luna has urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to look into what she describes as “disturbing allegations,” pointing out that some relate to sexual misconduct while others concern potential campaign finance violations.
Thune has confirmed that the Senate Select Committee on Ethics is examining the accusations, as reported by sources.
Gallego’s office has stated that he created the fund because he feels he is being targeted by what they describe as “right-wing conspiracy theorists,” including Luna and others connected to the Trump administration.
Additionally, Luna mentioned that a woman, along with her legal counsel, is interested in publicly discussing an alleged encounter with Gallego. The senator has firmly denied engaging in any sexual misconduct or inappropriate actions towards women.
Gallego found himself facing significant scrutiny following the resignation of former Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell from California due to allegations of sexual assault and harassment. Several women have accused Swalwell of similar misconduct, including an ex-staffer who claimed he initiated unwanted physical contact.
After Swalwell’s departure, Gallego accused him of dishonesty regarding his own past. Notably, Gallego had chaired Swalwell’s unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2020, and the two have often been described as close friends.
As of now, neither Gallego’s office nor the Senate Select Committee on Ethics has provided a comment regarding these developments.
