Michigan Senate Candidate Addresses Anti-Semitism Concerns

Mallory McMorrow, a Democratic candidate for the Michigan Senate, was quick to discuss whether anti-Semitism exists within her party. “Yes,” she answered directly during a Senate debate.

This candid observation comes at a time when the Senate primary is becoming quite competitive. Her response sheds light on a growing concern about whether the Democratic Party has moved beyond merely criticizing the Israeli government to fostering negative sentiments toward Jewish individuals altogether.

Concerns Around Electoral Impact

Many progressive members within the Democratic Party are becoming increasingly vocal regarding the U.S.-Israel relationship. For instance, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who identifies as a socialist, has raised questions about the United States collaborating with Israel amid ongoing conflicts, emphasizing humanitarian issues.

This trend isn’t confined to New York. Congressional Democrats like Rep. Ilhan Omar, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Ro Khanna, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Sen. Chris Murphy have been advocating for a re-evaluation of U.S. support for Israel, particularly in light of the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict.

Interestingly, one of McMorrow’s rivals for the Senate seat, Abdul El-Sayed, has labeled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal,” going so far as to describe the Israeli government as “evil.”

McMorrow’s Unique Positioning

McMorrow aims to carve out a niche for herself as a candidate who is distinct from both El-Sayed’s critical stance and the more establishment-leaning Rep. Haley Stevens. She clarified that criticizing her party doesn’t mean she fully agrees with the current U.S. position on Israel. “We have to unequivocally state that the violence from the Netanyahu government needs to stop,” she emphasized.

When asked about U.S. aid to Israel, she indicated she would support a recent resolution by Sen. Bernie Sanders aimed at blocking arms sales to Israel. McMorrow stressed the importance of making a distinction in rhetoric that aligns closely with Israel as a nation while separating it from the sentiments of American Jews.

A Call for Peace

“It’s crucial that we work toward long-term peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis, but we must avoid framing this as an anti-Jewish message and instead focus on being anti-Netanyahu,” McMorrow stated, earning applause from the audience.
