Los Angeles Landmark Seeks Community Support Amid Financial Crisis
A cherished establishment in Los Angeles is calling on the public for assistance as it faces increasing financial difficulties, overdue payments, and urgent repair needs that have led to a temporary closure.
Cielito Lindo, an iconic stand on Olvera Street, has gained popularity for its hand-rolled taquitos served with avocado sauce. The situation was shared in a recent social media announcement, revealing the serious financial challenges the acclaimed eatery is currently experiencing.
This nearly century-old restaurant is actively looking for donations to help “keep Cielito Lindo alive for future generations.”
Founded in 1934 by Aurora Guerrero, a single immigrant mother from Zacatecas, Mexico, Cielito Lindo has been a family-run business for generations and is now managed by her granddaughters.
The request for support follows the announcement on May 12 that the stand had closed temporarily to tackle electrical issues and conduct necessary repairs.
In their latest update, the family business indicated a pressing need for funds to cover the electrical installations along with past due rent exacerbated by the pandemic shutdown, which has now accumulated late fees and interest from the city.
Much like many small businesses in Los Angeles, Cielito Lindo pointed to rising costs as a significant burden. They are striving to keep their menu prices affordable while handling “significantly increased operating costs.”
Despite financial pressures, the long-established taqueria plans to reopen with revised pricing and additional benefits once renovations are completed.
Recently, Cielito Lindo has found itself confused with other establishments sharing the same name. There have been misleading calls for boycotts linked to unrelated restaurants, including a South El Monte eatery tied to a political figure and Lindo Michoacán in Las Vegas, which faced negative attention for hosting a Trump campaign event.
However, Cielito Lindo maintains its independence and continues its tradition as a family-owned favorite on Olvera Street.
