Republican groups take legal action to protect Missouri's updated congressional map from Democratic challenges

Republicans Challenge Missouri’s Redistricting Map in Court

On Thursday, both the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) launched a legal battle to uphold Missouri’s newly designed congressional map.

The RNC explained that this lawsuit aims to step in as Democrats ramp up what Republicans see as a national effort to undermine legally passed redistricting measures.

“Democrats across the country are filing frivolous lawsuits to maintain power after electoral defeats,” said RNC Chairman Joe Gruters. He emphasized that the committee is standing up for Missourians who deserve fair representation, criticizing Democrats for trying to manipulate the court system in their favor.

The RNC maintains that the congressional map approved by Missouri’s General Assembly last year adheres fully to state constitutional requirements. However, challengers of this map have claimed that it violates certain provisions of the Missouri Constitution.

NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson weighed in, stating, “Missourians deserve fair and equal representation, not a partisan power grab that aims to silence voters and overturn established maps.” He added that both the NRCC and RNC are committed to maintaining the integrity of the democratic process.

This lawsuit unfolds as various organizer groups push for a referendum that might allow voters in Missouri to reinstate the state’s previous congressional map. Republicans argue that this certification shouldn’t happen until the statewide signature verification process is finished.

The RNC expressed concerns that certifying the referendum prematurely could obstruct the implementation of the new map. Thus, the lawsuit seeks to permit the review process to continue and ensure adherence to election laws before any referendum moves ahead.

The RNC also mentioned that Democrats have already spent over $6 million attempting, without success, to contest Missouri’s congressional maps in court.

In the midst of this, the Supreme Court recently ruled that Louisiana’s 2024 congressional map, which aimed to include second-majority black districts, was found to be illegal racial gerrymandering. Supporters of the Missouri map argue that this ruling strengthens limitations on racial considerations in congressional redistricting, while voting rights advocates interpret the implications differently.

The RNC highlighted that this Supreme Court decision reinforces the idea that states shouldn’t create congressional maps primarily based on race, allowing state legislatures significant authority to draft districts reflecting residents’ political preferences.

Last year, Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe enacted the new congressional map, which Republicans hope will enable them to secure more House seats in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Critics suggest the map’s design aims to enhance Republican advantages while diluting the influence of certain communities, a claim that supporters reject.

Former President Donald Trump previously praised the map, labeling it “awesome” and believing it would lead to more MAGA Republicans joining Congress in the next midterms.
