Activists in Key District Seek Candidates Who Prioritize Immigrants

CASA Activists Embrace Immigrant-Centric Candidates

Activists from CASA in Action have made their stance clear: they are advocating for candidates who prioritize immigrant rights. A recent post by Semafor’s Dave Weigel on X showcased this message in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, with signs proclaiming their support for leaders who “put immigrants first.”

This shift marks a notable departure from the America First agenda that resonated with many supporters of former President Donald Trump. CASA in Action, boasting 190,000 members, emphasizes its influence in rallying voters, including those from Black, Latinx, African American, Indigenous, and immigrant communities, to elect progressive leaders capable of enacting change.

Recently, they endorsed Walla Bregay, a candidate for the 5th Congressional District. This move aligns with local legislation proposed by Prince George’s County Council members to prohibit immigrant detention facilities in the area.

Bregay expressed her thoughts on the legislation, saying, “This bill aims to draw a clear line for Prince George’s County. As the daughter of immigrants, I know what is at stake. There are no ICE detention facilities in a community built by immigrants.”

She continued, asserting, “We will not allow ourselves to profit from the suffering and dehumanization of our neighbors. Our county stands for dignity, safety, and justice.” This comment, though well-intentioned, seemed to overlook the complexities surrounding illegal immigration, including the challenges posed by individuals captured by ICE.

Moreover, the Democratic Party appears to be aligning with Bregay’s views, as her platform encompasses a range of progressive issues, including access to healthcare and various rights agendas. However, it’s worth noting that CASA has faced criticism for its past statements, including expressions of solidarity with controversial groups implicated in global conflicts.

This situation highlights ongoing debates about immigration and welfare, with research indicating a significant reliance on taxpayer-funded assistance among immigrant households compared to native-born Americans. The effects of such policies raise questions about both economic impact and community cohesion.
