Individual associated with Islamic State receives 15-year prison term for plan to attack Taylor Swift concert

Verdict Delivered in Vienna Concert Terror Plot

A court in Vienna-Neustadt, Austria delivered a significant verdict late on May 28, 2026, sentencing a 21-year-old man, Beran Aliji, to 15 years in prison for plotting a terrorist attack during a Taylor Swift concert that was scheduled for 2024.

Aliji, suspected of having connections to the Islamic State (IS), confessed to multiple terrorism charges, including intentions to attack concertgoers outside the Ernst Happel Stadium during Swift’s performance in August 2024. Prosecutors revealed that he had pledged allegiance to IS and was specifically planning to strike fans gathered for the event.

The three-day concert, set for August 8th to 10th, was ultimately canceled due to emerging concerns of a potential attack, which left nearly 200,000 fans disappointed. However, law enforcement received acclaim for their intervention, as it possibly averted a tragedy.

Evidence indicated that Aliji and his accomplices intended to assault festival attendees using knives and explosives. There were also plans to illegally procure weapons, including grenades and machine guns, alongside research into bomb-making techniques related to Islamic State activities.

In one disturbing account, Aliji was reportedly seen operating a Volkswagen Beetle equipped with a fake police siren and flashing lights aimed at the crowd. His scheme involved detonating an explosive device hidden within a Red Bull can. A search of his residence unearthed bomb-making instructions and materials suitable for crafting explosives.

Despite his guilty plea, Aliji was subject to the legal process in Austria. He appeared in court alongside another individual, a 21-year-old from Slovakia named Alda K., who received a 12-year sentence for his role in the failed plot. A third suspect, Hasan E., remains in custody in Saudi Arabia, linked to broader plans for coordinated attacks in several countries during Ramadan in 2024.

The court also found the trio guilty of complicity in the attempted murder stemming from an alleged stabbing of a security official in Mecca in March 2024. Prosecutors noted that Hasan E. had also attacked and injured a few police officers and a woman before his arrest. Currently, he has not been convicted or sentenced but is still in pretrial detention.

Former CIA Deputy Director David S. Cohen mentioned that the CIA played a role in providing crucial information that led to the arrests linked to the planned concert attack.

“They were planning to kill huge numbers, tens of thousands of people, probably many Americans, at this concert,” Cohen remarked during the 2024 Annual Intelligence Summit. “The Austrians were able to be arrested because government agencies and partners in the intelligence community provided information about what this ISIS-linked group was up to.”

Reflecting on the situation, Taylor Swift shared her feelings of fear and guilt, aware that many fans had traveled great distances for the concert.

“It was shocking to see the Vienna show canceled,” she posted on Instagram. “But I was also very grateful to the authorities, because thanks to them we ended up grieving a concert instead of a life.”
