Criticism Surrounds Jill Biden’s Comments on Debate
Two columnists from The New York Times are facing backlash for their comments regarding the notable Trump-Biden debate after Jill Biden suggested she thought her husband was “having a stroke.”
In June 2024, Joe Biden’s debate performance stunned many, leading him to withdraw from the presidential race shortly thereafter.
“I really don’t know what happened,” Jill Biden shared with CBS News. “When I saw that, I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke,’ and I was absolutely terrified.” In her forthcoming book, she also mentioned her concerns that her husband might be “addicted to drugs.”

Her remarks have reignited discussions around the debate, with the two columnists being somewhat more optimistic compared to the devastation felt by others.
“You had a rattling, stumbling President Biden and a disoriented, ranting President Trump, who spent two hours lying. So, was there really a winner? Certainly not,” said columnist Jamel Bouie at the time.

Another columnist, Lydia Polgreen, expressed, “No one really won, but those planning to vote in November absolutely lost. This was a huge setback for Biden. At times, his voice was nearly inaudible. He avoided key questions, while Trump just kept lying. It was painful to watch.” She felt that Biden appeared bullied by Trump’s aggressive behavior.
Interestingly, Bouie and Polgreen’s views were in the minority, as most of their colleagues declared Trump the clear victor.
“His own wife thought he might be having a stroke, yet these two columnists insisted it was a draw,” Dan McLaughlin from National Review pointed out, noting the discrepancy in opinions.
McLaughlin’s observations went viral, prompting additional comments from critics, including jokes about Biden’s performance. “Positive spin: was he [stroking] or perhaps drugged? Biden managed to secure a tie with Trump!” quipped Ashley Parker of The Atlantic.
CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski chimed in, referencing a related graph humorously, while others continued to express disbelief at the assessment.
Fox News Digital reached out to Bouie and Polgreen for their thoughts on the debate ruling but did not receive a response.
