Tim Ream chosen as captain for the 2026 World Cup by USMNT

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — Tim Ream has been named captain of the USMNT for the upcoming World Cup.

The announcement came on Saturday just before the team headed to Charlotte for its first send-off friendly against Senegal on Sunday. Ream has been a familiar face in this role, having captained the team in 16 of Mauricio Pochettino’s 23 matches. Many thought he would take the captaincy in the 2022 World Cup, even when Tyler Adams wore the armband.

“It’s really, well, more than just a dream come true,” Ream expressed. “Being part of this group has meant everything to me, and I’ve always done all I could to support it. I’m just incredibly thankful to be here. This recognition doesn’t change my approach or who I am. I won’t take this honor for granted as we head into the World Cup.”

Ream, now 38, had almost considered his international career finished after 2022, but he has re-emerged as a vital part of the squad under Pochettino’s leadership.

Pochettino emphasized that being named captain doesn’t automatically secure Ream a spot in the starting eleven, but it would be quite surprising if he wasn’t on the pitch for the USMNT’s World Cup opener against Paraguay on June 12.

“We’re really lucky to have him. He’s been an excellent captain, both on and off the field,” Pochettino noted. “He has the kind of experience we’re looking for in our leader. He’s proactive and thoughtful, both when playing and in training. His presence adds real value to the team.”

He added, “Connecting with players and sharing that experience is, you know, really important. He’s fantastic for that. We’re fortunate to have someone with his character to guide the younger players who might not have as much experience.”

Pochettino mentioned that he consulted various trusted individuals within the squad, but ultimately, the decision for captain rested with him. “It’s a group I really trust and who always listen to me. After some discussion, we decided on Tim. This is his first time in this role, and I believe he prioritizes the federation, U.S. Soccer, and his teammates in his actions,” he said.
