Tobias Myers’ Potential Return to Mets as a Starter

Tobias Myers, initially a reliever, may make a transition back to the Mets but this time as a starting pitcher.

The right-hander was sent down to Triple-A Syracuse after Friday’s game, which allowed the Mets to bolster their bullpen options. Manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned that Myers will be extended for two weeks to provide the team with greater flexibility in utilizing him.

Myers will adhere to a “scripted” program, potentially enhancing his preparedness if the Mets decide to slot him into their starting lineup.

“We’ll evaluate after these 15 days,” Mendoza commented ahead of the Mets’ 6-1 triumph against the Marlins. “He could either continue his development or revert back to his previous role. He’s quite adaptable and holds significant value for our team.”

Recently, Myers faced challenges on the mound, giving up two runs in just one inning during a practice session, which raised his ERA to 4.05. Throughout his time with the Mets, he has taken on different roles including opener, long-reliever, and high-pressure situations.

“It was a tough choice considering how vital he was for us,” Mendoza explained regarding Myers’ demotion. “We assured him he’d be back soon. He understood, though, he’s obviously not thrilled about it.”

Now, Cionel Perez, a lefty, has been added to the Mets’ roster and made a great impression with a flawless six-inning performance on his debut.

In more team news, Bobby Valentine and Lee Mazzilli were honored with induction into the Mets Hall of Fame during a ceremony before the game.

The event was well-attended, featuring former managers like Joe Torre and Willie Randolph, and GMs Joe McIlvaine and Steve Phillips, along with various Hall of Famers, including Mike Piazza and Mookie Wilson.

Lou Lamoriello, a prominent hockey executive, was also present. Interestingly, he had scouted Valentine to play in the Cape Cod League when he was coaching baseball at Providence College.

Meanwhile, Jorge Polanco, who is currently rehabbing at Double-A Binghamton, might be back in action for the Mets in their upcoming series in San Diego. He’s been sidelined since April 15 due to a wrist issue and Achilles bursitis.

On a positive note, the Mets have recently triumphed in 8 out of their last 11 home games, though they’re sitting at a 14-15 record for the season at Citi Field.
