Exciting Night for Pete Crow Armstrong
Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong had quite the evening on Saturday at Busch Stadium. Unfortunately, it was a different story for St. Louis Cardinals fans who managed to snag his home run ball late in the game.
As Crow Armstrong stepped onto the field in the top of the eighth inning, with the Cubs leading 3-1 against their rivals, a chorus of “overrated” chants rose from shirtless fans in the right field, especially from the much-discussed “tarp-off” section.
Cardinals pitcher Gordon Grasefo, with a 1-0 count, tossed a fastball over the middle. Crow Armstrong, capitalizing on the moment, smacked his seventh home run of the season, sending the ball soaring into a sea of shirtless spectators.
As PCA joyfully rounded the bases, the fan who caught the home run attempted to toss it back onto the field, met with a mix of boos and cheers.
But, and this is key, the attempt didn’t go well. Not only did the fan struggle to get the ball back in play, but he also accidentally hit another fan nearby with his awkward throw.
This match may have been one of the toughest scenes for Cardinals supporters this MLB season. It’s tough to watch your team’s rival hit a ball, reportedly 444 feet, while a fan can’t even make a simple toss to return it to the field amid a crowd chanting “overrated.”
Nonetheless, Crow Armstrong’s eighth-inning home run was a bright spot, but it wasn’t his only achievement. He actually had an impressive game overall, going 4-for-5 with a double and a home run.
This performance marked Crow Armstrong’s first multi-hit game since May 8. The Cubs clinched the victory, winning 6-1 against the Cardinals, kicking off the final match of the three-game series set for Sunday night.
