Bosnia Struggles with a 70 Percent Increase in Migrant Arrivals in 2026

Surge in Illegal Immigration in Bosnia and Herzegovina

SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina — The country is experiencing a significant uptick in illegal immigration, with migrant arrivals rising by 67.5 percent in the first four months of 2026 compared to the same timeframe last year, as reported by the Ministry of Security. This increase has intensified challenges along the Western Balkans route and has led to numerous arrests related to smuggling as migrants attempt to travel through Croatia toward the European Union.

Recently, Bosnian border police have conducted several operations targeting smugglers aiding migrants headed to EU borders. For instance, two Bosnian individuals were apprehended while transporting 15 illegal immigrants, primarily from Bangladesh and Pakistan, near the Gradiska border crossing, which is a key exit point into Croatia.

In another operation, authorities uncovered the transportation of an additional 15 migrants via the same border area, also involving individuals from Bangladesh and Pakistan. Prosecutors directed the arrest of both drivers and ordered the confiscation of their vehicle and communication devices used in the smuggling activities.

This surge in arrivals is testing Bosnia’s reception centers, which are already nearly at full capacity. While reports suggest that irregular crossings along the Western Balkans route have slightly decreased compared to last year, this corridor remains one of the most significant migration hotspots within the EU.

Europol recently announced the dismantling of a major transnational smuggling ring that had been using Bosnia as a transit point for facilitating the movement of over 600 migrants to Slovenia, Austria, and Germany. The network organized journeys from Istanbul to Sarajevo and onward to the Croatian border, employing encrypted messaging for coordination and recruiting drivers from Central Europe to take migrants deeper into the EU.

Migrants usually enter Bosnia legally via air, then connect with smugglers who assist them in crossing the Bosnian-Croatian border on foot, eventually placing them in rental cars. Europol identified the corridor connecting Bosnia, Croatia, and Slovenia as a crucial route for illegal migration into Western Europe.

In response to the rising immigration pressures, Croatia has announced plans to establish a new migrant reception center at a former military air base near the Bosnian border, aiming to handle the increasing influx along the Western Balkan route.

Tragically, it was reported that a migrant died at the hands of smugglers near the Slovenia-Croatia border. The situation escalated further when Croatian police found four migrants deceased and 15 others in critical condition in the same region. This incident echoes the severe tactics employed by smuggling networks akin to those associated with Mexican cartels along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The suspect involved is a 22-year-old Montenegrin national who fled the scene, and, as of now, there hasn’t been any information released regarding his whereabouts or whether he has been captured.

With warmer weather on the horizon, Bosnian authorities have expressed concerns that the influx of migrants may continue to rise, putting additional strain on border police and raising worries among EU nations already grappling with migration challenges.
