Teen Takeovers Stir Chaos Across the U.S.
Recent violent incidents involving teenagers have sparked disorder in various U.S. cities, including Norfolk, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. As juvenile crime rates climb, officials are considering curfews and pondering parental accountability for their children’s behavior.
In a twist, charges against university students who allegedly organized a beach “takeover” earlier this month were unexpectedly dropped. Delaware’s Attorney General, Kathy Jennings, stated that the dismissal was due to “no factual basis” for the accusations.
This came after four students from Delaware State University—19-year-old Xander Nichol, 21-year-olds Angeline Cloville and Eric Barnett, and 22-year-old Keyon Scott—were arrested. They faced serious allegations including encouraging riots and conspiracy.
On May 19, chaos erupted when hundreds of young people flocked to beaches and promenades, reportedly spurred by the promotion of a “takeover” on social media. This incident led to numerous arrests for offenses like underage drinking and disorderly conduct, resulting in some businesses closing early.
However, it seems the city of Rehoboth Beach wasn’t informed about the charge dismissals. A spokesperson for the city expressed surprise, indicating that a thorough review of the case might still be needed. “Our understanding suggests that not all relevant facts have been fully considered,” the spokesperson said, noting that it might be beneficial to clarify the situation further for both the city and the public.
Furthermore, the city has reached out to Fuller McKendall of the NAACP to discuss these matters, though they have yet to receive a response. Despite that, they’re eager for constructive dialogue.
Requests for comments directed to the Delaware Department of Justice and the NAACP Delaware Chapter Conference remain unanswered. Fox News Digital has also reached out to the involved students for their take on the situation.
