Mexico finds 870-foot tunnel with an electronic rail close to the US border

Discovery of Underground Tunnel Near US-Mexico Border

Authorities in Mexico have uncovered a well-constructed underground tunnel near the border with the United States, reportedly designed to link Tijuana and San Diego. This tunnel features lighting, ventilation, and an electronic system for transporting goods, highlighting the sophistication of its design.

On Saturday, the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico, or FGR, made the announcement following a search warrant executed in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood of Tijuana, Baja California. The tunnel measures approximately 265 meters (about 870 feet) in length and runs about 6.3 meters (21 feet) deep.

According to investigators, the tunnel is equipped with functional infrastructure, including a sliding mechanism intended for transporting goods back and forth across the border. It was uncovered during an intelligence operation conducted by the FGR’s Criminal Investigation Department, in collaboration with the Mexican Security Cabinet.

The search warrant was executed as part of a broader investigation into suspected violations of Mexico’s Firearms and Explosives Act, alongside inquiries related to drug trafficking.

Officials suspect that the site may have functioned as a logistics center for storing and trafficking arms, explosives, and illegal drugs.

Photographs from the FGR showcase personnel navigating the tunnel, as well as access points and items retrieved during the operation. Items recovered include ammunition, suspected methamphetamine and marijuana, a cell phone, along with various documents.

Images also reveal the ventilation systems within the tunnel, reinforcing claims of its advanced operational level. The FGR has suggested that this tunnel likely connects to roadways in San Diego, though the precise location on the U.S. side hasn’t yet been disclosed.

Officials regard this discovery as a significant setback for criminal organizations that rely on tunnel systems for smuggling drugs and other illegal materials across borders. Evidence and recovered property will be handed over to federal prosecutors in Baja California, enabling further investigation.
