Stabbing on MARTA Train Claims Life of Atlanta Woman
A tragic incident occurred on a MARTA train when a 66-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in what authorities describe as a random attack. The victim, identified as Margaret Swan by the Fulton County Coroner’s Office, was assaulted while traveling between the Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations, according to MARTA Police Chief Scott Clair.
This appears to be a senseless act of violence. MARTA extended condolences to Swan’s loved ones and to those who were witnesses to this horrific event.
Concerns Rise Over Transit Safety
John Elijah Matthews, a 25-year-old man, has been charged with the murder of Swan after allegedly attacking her on public transport. Surveillance footage reportedly shows that Swan was sitting alone on the train when Matthews approached her.
At around 11:21 a.m. on Saturday, cameras captured Swan seated alone in the train car. Just minutes later, Matthews was seen walking toward her and standing close by. Nineteen seconds passed before he moved in closer, and seconds later, he allegedly drew a knife and slashed her throat. Swan was reportedly stabbed 18 to 20 times during this unprovoked attack.
Even during the assault, Swan is said to have screamed for help. The footage indicates that Matthews discarded the weapon and remained near her as the train approached the Oakland City Station.
Once the train reached its destination, Matthews exited while still holding the knife. He was arrested shortly afterward by officers responding to the scene. Despite paramedics’ attempts to save her, Swan succumbed to her injuries at the location.
The situation has raised alarms among passengers in Atlanta, who have expressed growing concerns about safety on transit systems. Just last week, a similar stabbing incident occurred at a nearby station.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for further updates on the case.
