Great-grandmother fatally stabbed on Atlanta MARTA had a knife but 'didn't have time to defend herself'

Brutal Murder of Great-Grandmother on Atlanta Train

A tragic incident unfolded on an Atlanta train where a great-grandmother was alleged to have been murdered by a homeless individual. According to her daughter, Margaret Swan, 66, was holding a knife for self-defense, but unfortunately, she didn’t have the chance to use it.

Swan had been using the Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority regularly for decades, never having learned to drive. Early Saturday morning, she was attacked and stabbed nearly 20 times, her throat cut open.

Shanae Sams, Swan’s daughter, recounted her mother’s routine, noting that she was frequently on the train. A retired parent coordinator for Atlanta Public Schools, Sams expressed her disbelief at the attack. “I know people often say to protect yourself, but my mother was doing just that when this act of violence happened unexpectedly,” she shared. “She didn’t even have time to react.”

At about 11:20 AM, Swan was alone on the train when John Elijah Matthews, 25, appeared on CCTV footage, got on the train, and, without warning, attacked her with a knife.

Passengers nearby, including a mother of three and a grandmother, were reportedly in a state of panic, screaming and attempting to escape as Matthews pinned Swan down. He then proceeded to stab her 18 to 20 times, leaving behind a significant amount of blood and ending her life.

“She was crying out for help, but nobody came to her aid,” Sams told the media.

Matthews was apprehended shortly after the attack while on the Auckland City station platform, still wielding a knife.

In a heart-wrenching commentary, Sams pointed fingers at local authorities, criticizing the decision to temporarily allow free rides within the transit system during renovations. She emphasized a lack of security measures. “It’s an issue of negligence,” she said. “In a system where anyone can board without scrutiny, the lack of proper security is alarming and could have prevented this tragedy.”

This incident took place not long after another stabbing at a nearby Georgia station, raising concerns about safety on public transit. MARTA officials expressed their sorrow over the “senseless and heartbreaking loss” and noted that they employ thousands of staff and law enforcement officers to safeguard their passengers.

A spokesperson for the transit agency assured that they strive to maintain a secure environment and respond quickly to incidents as they arise.

Currently, Matthews is facing a charge of felony murder and remains in custody at the Fulton County Jail.
