Tragic Loss of Toledo Athlete in Crash
A 19-year-old college athlete from the University of Toledo lost her life in a three-vehicle collision in Ohio. Eva Moran, a pole vaulter, was the sole fatality in the accident, which also involved two other individuals aged 19 and 23.
“The University of Toledo community is heartbroken by the death of Eva Moran,” stated Athletic Director Tom Moreland. “Eva was a remarkable student-athlete whose determination and positive spirit inspired everyone fortunate enough to know her.”
Moreland expressed condolences to Eva’s family, including her parents, Alena and Derek, as well as her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton, and Kaia. “We ask that you keep Eva’s loved ones in your thoughts during this incredibly challenging time,” he added.
Andrea Grove-McDonough, the director of cross country and track and field, remarked, “There are no words that can capture the sadness our team feels over the loss of Eva. She was a wonderful young woman whose energy and kindness had an immediate impact on our program.” She noted that Eva approached every challenge with positivity and a genuine love for her teammates.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday afternoon along Route 309 in Claridon Township. Reports indicate that Moran was driving a 2012 Hyundai Elantra when she collided with another vehicle, a 2013 GMC Acadia, which was waiting to make a left turn. It seems she was unable to maintain a safe distance and struck the Acadia. Subsequently, a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, traveling in the opposite direction, collided with her vehicle, resulting in Moran being ejected from her car.
Having recently completed her freshman year, Eva was majoring in health sciences. In high school, she made a mark by setting the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference pole vault record, achieving a height of 12 feet and ½ inches. In addition, she finished 10th at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships last month, recording a personal best of 3.57 meters.
