Fahey Urges ‘Performative’ Protest at New Jersey ICE Facility

In Newark, New Jersey, a protest is unfolding at the local ICE facility. Activists and some lawmakers are pushing for the facility’s closure. This has sparked a heated debate, as Jonathan Fahey, the former Acting ICE Director, countered the protestors’ claims with data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He pointed out that many individuals in custody have serious criminal backgrounds, including charges related to murder and sexual offenses. Fahey also criticized the Democratic Party for allegedly shielding these individuals from justice.

Just last week, the DHS announced a series of arrests involving illegal immigrants in New Jersey, some of whom had prior convictions for serious crimes, which included manslaughter and sex offenses. These arrests were conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) outside the Delaney Hall Detention Center, an area currently experiencing unrest due to complaints about living conditions for undocumented immigrants.

Lauren Biss, acting assistant secretary for DHS, addressed the situation, saying, “While sanctuary politicians and left-wing activists spread false claims about the Delaney Hall facility, the dedicated members of ICE continue their efforts to remove dangerous criminals from our streets.” She listed serious offenses connected to those apprehended, including voluntary homicide, sexual assault, and aggravated assault.

Biss remarked, “These politicians need to stop spreading misinformation about ICE detention facilities. Instead, they ought to acknowledge the hard work of ICE officers who are committed to maintaining public safety.” She added firmly that nothing would deter their mission of making communities safer.

According to DHS, individuals arrested in the recent crackdown include some of the most dangerous offenders. For instance, Marcos Delacruz, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, has a history of sexual assault and fraud. Meanwhile, Success Bounte, from Ghana, had convictions related to burglary and identity theft.

Details on Arrests

Among those arrested was Jose Manuel Rivera Metz from Guatemala, previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter. Another, Ismael Antonio Moreno-Javier from the Dominican Republic, has a record involving weapons offenses. Carlos Javier Llano Batista, also from the Dominican Republic, faced theft and burglary charges.

Pastor Esteban Montes Navarro from Mexico was taken into custody due to previous assault and weapons possession charges. Further, Cesar Augusto Díaz Poveda from Ecuador was held on assault-related charges as well.

Notably, Pavlin Patricia da Silva from Brazil and David Benitez from Honduras faced arrest for various crimes, some of which involved theft and assault, respectively. Each individual’s past adds layers to the ongoing debate about immigration policy and public safety.

As the activism continues, the implications of the arrests, alongside the protest efforts, remain in focus for both sides of the discussion.
