Texas A&M Aggies Shine in 2027 Recruiting Cycle

As we move from May to June, the college football recruiting season is heating up, and it’s interesting to see how various teams are faring in the 2027 cycle.

I’ve mentioned before that, while rankings are important, they aren’t everything. However, one team that really stands out in both recruiting rankings and advanced metrics is the Texas A&M Aggies.

Right now, the Aggies hold the top spot in 247Sports and On3’s overall recruiting rankings. It’s worth noting that they briefly lost this position to Oklahoma but quickly reclaimed it with another impressive recruit, edge rusher Frederick Ards III.

Ards, a four-star recruit from Orlando, Florida, marks A&M’s ninth top-100 recruit this cycle—a figure that many top-10 classes struggle to achieve by signing day.

To put that in context, last year, A&M’s class, which was ranked No. 10, had only four top-100 prospects despite bringing in eight total commits. Currently, the Aggies have five composite five-star players, and they seem to be on a roll.

Even if head coach Mike Elko decided to stop recruiting today and didn’t make another call until after signing day, the outlook wouldn’t change much. With an average player rating of 95.00 and a class score of 293.85, the Aggies had the sixth-best class in the 2026 cycle with just 17 commits.

A&M’s roster is rounded out with three-star players and could easily secure a top-five finish in the 2027 cycle. Notably, their five-star commitments are the most of any program this cycle; in fact, you’d have to go back to 2023 to find a class that surpassed them, when Alabama had nine five-stars.

This seems quite familiar if you’ve been following recruiting for even a short while. After the introduction of NIL, the Aggies had a similar surge, signing the No. 1 pick in 2022.

Back then, that class was the highest-rated in 247Sports history with eight five-star signees. The intensity of that recruiting drive led some to accuse then-head coach Jimbo Fisher of essentially buying his class, which resulted in his infamous “sliced bread” comment.

So, are the Aggies aiming to replicate that success, hoping to build another historic class for Elko? We’ve already seen what he can achieve; under his leadership, the Aggies made it to the College Football Playoff just two years into his tenure. That’s quite an accomplishment.

What influence will this new influx of talent have on his roster? Perhaps good things are on the horizon.

However, there are those who might caution against what happened with that 2022 class, where recruiting too many five-star players led to challenges—too many stars can be tricky to manage.

Many players from that historic class didn’t stick around long; some key names left for other opportunities, and Fisher was dismissed not long after that stellar recruiting effort.

It’ll be intriguing to see how this new class shakes out and what they accomplish at Texas A&M. Regardless, the Aggies are currently making waves in the recruiting landscape, and other teams will need to take notice, as Elko and his players seem poised for the long haul.
