Indiana Fever’s Team Meeting After Loss to Portland Fire
The Indiana Fever held a significant team meeting on Saturday following a 16-point defeat to the Portland Fire, which included a tense moment between star guard Caitlin Clark and head coach Stephanie White.
Veteran player Sophie Cunningham shared that the nearly two-hour discussion on Monday focused on the team’s identity and their struggles with defensive execution, leaving them at a 4-4 record to start the season.
“It was a productive meeting, so I hope we can move forward together. I’m looking forward to us being on the same page come Thursday,” Cunningham mentioned during practice before their upcoming game against the Atlanta Dream.
She noted, “I think we’re all feeling better now that we’ve addressed our issues. We’ve stripped things back, and we’re ready to put in the work.” Additionally, she stated that the team is currently using only one defensive scheme because the players need time to grasp others.
Cunningham emphasized the importance of understanding roles and toughness, mentioning, “We’re not playing tough enough right now, and that’s not who we are. We need to step away from that. Defense may not be enjoyable, but it’s essential for a winning team.”
She also pointed out the challenge of only utilizing one defensive strategy, stressing the need for focus and basketball intelligence to adapt to different schemes.
Cunningham described the meeting as “much-needed,” initiated by the coaching staff but ultimately being driven by the players themselves.
Coach White reflected on the productivity of the session, saying, “Anytime we can have genuine conversations, it’s beneficial… Execution, getting to know each other, and navigating our challenges are all part of it.”
White added, “We want this team to be led by the players, giving them ownership and encouraging each other.”
Guard Kelsey Mitchell highlighted that the Fever’s culture is being put to the test. “If you think everything is smooth sailing, you’re mistaken. Tough times can either shape you or shatter you. I hope it strengthens us,” she remarked.
All three—Cunningham, White, and Mitchell—agreed that it’s better to encounter these kinds of challenges early in the season rather than later.
The Fever lost their latest game against Portland, 100-84, marking their second consecutive defeat.
Clark struggled significantly during the game, facing foul trouble, and managed just six points on 1-of-7 shooting in 22 minutes of play.
Looking ahead, the Fever are set to compete against Angel Reese and the Dream this Thursday in Indianapolis.
