Kean Prepares to Return to Capitol After Absence
Rep. Tom Kean Jr. from New Jersey announced on Tuesday that he plans to return to the Capitol “in the coming weeks” after being absent for several months.
He mentioned in his statement that serving his district has been the “honor of my life.” Kean last participated in a House vote on March 5. This announcement comes shortly after former President Donald Trump endorsed him as he seeks re-election, coinciding with the New Jersey House primary.
“Every day, I wake up determined to continue our work for New Jersey families by lowering costs, reinstating the salt tax deduction, funding law enforcement, supporting veterans, backing Israel, strengthening the economy, and improving government functions,” he stated, despite having missed all roll call votes since March 5. His voting record showed a 20% participation rate between January and March.
He emphasized that this campaign will present clear choices, noting that while Washington Democrats pursue agendas that are extreme and costly, he aims to prioritize his voters and collaborate with anyone to achieve results.
Interestingly, financial records reveal that Kean engaged in stock trading during his time away from Congress in March, raising some eyebrows.
Congressman Tom Kean’s new statement is here, but it’s less clear about his nearly three-month absence >>
He said, “I plan to transition from virtual to in-person work in the coming weeks. At that time, I will be completely transparent about the nature of my medical condition.”
Kean expressed optimism for the future, stating he’s ready to support voters throughout his district and is looking forward to winning the race while continuing his service to New Jersey.
In his statement, he mentioned that he is currently focused on recovery and, under medical advice, will shift from virtual work to in-person tasks soon, though he didn’t reveal specific details about his health condition. “When the time comes, I will fully disclose the nature of my medical condition,” he added.
Since 2023, Kean has served New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, a key area that has seen tight races in recent elections. In 2020, Biden led by 4 points, while in 2024, the margin was just 1 point, with Democrats keenly targeting this seat. The race has been labeled “very close” by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.
Kean concluded his statement by thanking constituents and colleagues for their prayers and patience, acknowledging the importance of transparency regarding his health and expressing a desire to share his experiences with the public.
In support of Kean, Trump described him as a “very good defender of America First” and a “tireless advocate” during a recent Truth Social event.
