Kenny Dalglish’s Cancer Diagnosis

Liverpool icon Sir Kenny Dalglish has shared some tough news about his health—he’s been diagnosed with cancer.

The 75-year-old took to social media on Tuesday, using humor to address his situation. He joked about his technological mishap that led to the unintended disclosure. “Unlike cell phone use, treatment is progressing well,” he remarked. He noted that, ideally, this should have remained a private matter but his lack of tech skills led to the announcement.

“Of course, I didn’t mean for this to go public,” he added, asking for privacy for himself and his family during this challenging time.

Interestingly, Dalglish’s announcement came shortly after news that his Liverpool replacement, Kevin Keegan, has been battling stage four cancer.

Liverpool, where Dalglish had a storied career—making 515 appearances as a player and 381 as a manager—expressed their solidarity with him. The club’s Instagram post read, “Our support and love are with you, Sir Kenny.”

Dalglish is celebrated for his impressive record, scoring 172 goals and assisting 171 times during his time with the team from 1977 to 1990, contributing to eight league titles, four League Cups, three European Cups, and one European Super Cup.

Before his time at Liverpool, he also played for Celtic, totaling 320 appearances there since 1967.

During his international journey, he achieved a remarkable record, earning 102 caps for Scotland and netting 30 goals.

Dalglish began his managerial career after the resignation of Liverpool manager Joe Fagan post-Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, taking on the player-manager role. He remained with the club in that capacity for nearly eight years and later managed Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United, and Celtic.

Newcastle, where he also spent time, has extended their support as well, stating, “Everyone at Newcastle United sends our thoughts and prayers to Sir Kenny Dalglish and his family following his diagnosis with cancer.”
