Sen. Bernie Sanders Confronted by Republican Protesters over Graham Platner Support
This week, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) found himself in a heated exchange with Republican staffers wrapped in towels outside the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) headquarters. This confrontation came after a debate concerning the backing of Maine Sen. Graham Platner, who has been mired in controversy.
Footage from Fox News Digital captured the scene, where Republican protesters, including staff from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), donned towels as a jab at a suggestive profile photo of Platner. The image shows the Democratic Senate candidate, shirtless and wrapped in a towel.
During the protest, one demonstrator asked Sanders, “Do you support Graham Platner despite his appearance on Kik?” This exchange occurred as Platner and other Democratic leaders were arriving and leaving the DSCC, preparing for the upcoming primary on June 9.
The scrutiny around Platner is considerable. Controversies include a tattoo he later covered, which was identified as a Nazi symbol, derogatory comments related to rape victims on Reddit, and posts that promoted racial stereotypes and political violence.
Compounding the issues, reports surfaced shortly before the primary that Platner had sent explicit text messages to a woman while he was married. These messages and the existence of an active Kik profile showing a shirtless mirror selfie have drawn even more criticism, particularly as Kik has been linked to child exploitation concerns.
Protesters were seen chanting phrases like, “Platner is creepy!” and “Remove the kicks!” alongside signs with strong accusations.
In his response to the questioning about Platner’s Kik account, Sanders shot back, “Are you a Republican?” when a protester pressed him about his stance. When another demonstrator brushed off his question, Sanders exploded against the Republicans’ morals, citing President Trump and the accusations surrounding him.
While no evidence has emerged suggesting that Platner communicated with minors through Kik, the app has drawn criticism due to its reputation for user safety. The focus surrounding Platner’s Kik profile highlights concerns about sexually suggestive imagery and the prior scandal linked to his marriage.
Amidst this turmoil, Platner has objected to certain portrayals of his personal life, and his wife has voiced objections to the release of private details. He also expressed remorse for past online comments and explained that the tattoo in question was acquired years ago, without understanding its historical significance.
This encounter outside the DSCC reflects an escalating Republican effort to hold national Democrats accountable for the controversies surrounding Platner, as prominent party figures continue their support of him ahead of Maine’s primary.
