Knicks Owner Keeps Grudge Against Oakley Despite Finals Return
James Dolan, the owner of the New York Knicks, still holds a grudge against former player Charles Oakley. This tension remains, even as the Knicks celebrate their return to the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years. Interestingly, even Michael Jordan’s intervention couldn’t mend the rift.
Before Game 1, NBA commissioner Adam Silver mentioned that he and Jordan had attempted to bring reconciliation between Dolan and Oakley, but their efforts were fruitless. Oakley, who played in a recent playoff game, is still banned from Madison Square Garden.
According to Rachel Nichols, Silver commented, “Adam Silver said that he and Michael Jordan tried their best to broker peace between Charles Oakley and James Dolan, but neither was successful.”
The backdrop of this feud dates back to February 2017, when Oakley attended a Knicks game and sat near Dolan. Dolan accused him of being verbally abusive, a claim Oakley denied. The situation escalated, culminating in Oakley being forcibly removed from the arena in handcuffs, much to the shock of fellow fans.
Instead of attempting to deescalate tensions, Dolan exacerbated things by suggesting that Oakley had an alcohol problem. Oakley retaliated by launching a defamation lawsuit, which has dragged on for years. Throughout this ongoing legal battle, Dolan has maintained Oakley’s ban from the Garden.
As the Knicks make their historic playoff run, Oakley watches the games from various arenas across the country, showing his support for the team he was instrumental in shaping during the 1990s. He’s welcome everywhere except Madison Square Garden.
Dolan’s continued refusal to reconcile with Oakley speaks volumes about his character rather than Oakley’s. Years later, the resentment remains strong. Even with Jordan and Silver’s failed attempts at resolution, Dolan holds firm in his stance.
