Trump announces his choice for attorney general, but Democrats promise to block confirmation.

Trump Replaces Attorney General Pam Bondi

On April 2, President Donald Trump removed Pam Bondi from her role as attorney general. He announced that Todd Blanche, his former personal attorney known for his legal talent, will take over as acting attorney general.

Since then, a few names have emerged as possible permanent candidates for the position. These include Lee Zeldin, the EPA Administrator, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Republican Senator Mike Lee from Utah, and Ted Cruz from Texas.

Trump made the announcement about Blanche during a private dinner at the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday.

In a video shared by Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, Trump stated, “Tomorrow, I’m going to direct Dan and everyone else involved in that very complicated process to make him permanent attorney general, which will move very quickly.”

The decision has already faced swift backlash from Democrats, who plan to oppose Blanche’s confirmation.

Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey remarked during a CNN interview that Blanche likely lacks the necessary votes for Senate confirmation. He also suggested that Blanche’s experience is questionable.

Booker expressed concern, emphasizing, “This is a man who has been involved in the investigation of the Fed chair, who has been involved in the investigation of former enemies of the president. And they’re weaponizing the Fed. They’re even targeting U.S. senators.” He criticized the idea that Trump only hires those willing to act as his personal lawyer rather than uphold the agency’s duties.

Under Blanche’s interim leadership, the Justice Department has made some strides, securing indictments against individuals including former FBI Director James Comey and former Cuban President Raul Castro, while also working to create a National Fraud Enforcement Agency.

After recognizing Blanche’s legal background as a prosecutor, Booker unambiguously labeled him “not a serious person.” He later reiterated his stance to CNN, indicating that similar doubts about Blanche’s qualifications may exist among his Republican colleagues.

Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut erupted with anger at the announcement, declaring Blanche “Corrupted and compromised by reckless Trump loyalties, clumsy as AG.” He questioned the appropriateness of having someone act as Trump’s personal attorney instead of representing the legal interests of the nation.

Democrats remain skeptical about whether Blanche will receive Senate confirmation, despite having been sworn in as deputy attorney general last year with a 52-46 vote.
