Lawler calls for comprehensive inquiry into NJ Democrat associated with Blind Sheikh

New Jersey Democratic House Candidate Involved in ‘Blind Sheikh’ Terrorism Trial

Dr. Adam Hamawi, a Democratic candidate for Congress in New Jersey, is facing significant scrutiny due to his links with Omar Abdelrahman, commonly referred to as the “Blind Sheikh.” Hamawi testified as a defense witness during Abdelrahman’s notorious 1995 trial regarding the World Trade Center bombing. As he gears up for the general election in a solidly blue district, critics are raising concerns about his past associations.

After the recent primary elections, Republican leaders expressed intentions to pursue a comprehensive investigation into Hamawi, given the implications of his connections to Abdelrahman, who was the mastermind behind the 1993 World Trade Center attack. Hamawi, a skilled orthopedic surgeon, has faced backlash for not just his ties to terrorism but also for his decision to defend Abdelrahman.

Representative Michael Lawler, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs and Middle East Subcommittee, has highlighted the seriousness of Hamawi’s situation. He confirmed plans to seek further investigation into Hamawi’s troubling background, especially if he secures a seat in Congress.

Hamawi recently triumphed in a crowded Democratic primary for a Central Jersey seat, which has been dominated by Democrats for over two decades, and will compete against Professor Greg Mele in the upcoming November election.

Lawler pointed out that Hamawi’s experience could be disqualifying for someone who needs access to sensitive national security information. He specified, “Adam Hamawi was a defense witness for a person convicted of orchestrating a major terrorist act.” This has further raised red flags regarding Hamawi’s ability to serve effectively.

Hamawi has contended with multiple instances of backlash, including accusations of being Islamophobic, as he defends his past choices. He stated, “Every Muslim will be called a terrorist at some point,” in an attempt to push back against the negative narratives surrounding him.

Josh Gottheimer, another Democratic congressman, voiced serious concerns about Hamawi’s links to individuals associated with terrorism. While he didn’t directly call for an investigation, he emphasized the need for Hamawi to clarify his connections and associations.

Throughout his trial testimony, Hamawi revealed details about meetings he had attended, which included extremist clerics, and discussions around politically charged topics, including jihad. He has previously stated that he met Abdelrahman in New Jersey and has had a longstanding association with the Muslim community.

Despite these claims, critics have pointed to Hamawi’s courtroom interactions, including his greetings to Abdelrahman, as evidence of an ongoing, personal connection. Such ties have raised questions and fueled ongoing debates over his qualifications for public office.
