Controversy Surrounding Graham Platner Ignored by Schumer
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York chose to sidestep ongoing questions regarding Democrat Graham Platner as he reaffirmed his backing for the troubled Senate hopeful.
Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, has been in hot water lately. Issues have arisen concerning tattoos that relate to Nazi symbols, disturbing Reddit posts where he made provocative comments about veterans, and alleged sexual messages he sent to women while married.
During a Capitol press conference on Tuesday, Schumer faced inquiries about whether he was satisfied with Platner’s explanations regarding these troubling matters. Schumer remarked, “I met with Graham Platner today, and we’re going to win.” He then shifted focus, urging, “Sen. Susan Collins, please take back the Senate.”
Speculation Surrounding Maine Ballot Provisions
Continuing to face scrutiny, Schumer was pressed multiple times about his support for Platner amid the scandal, especially since the party is criticizing Republicans like Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton for similar issues.
Instead of providing direct answers, Schumer reiterated his belief that they would unseat Susan Collins and reclaim the Senate. He then attempted to steer the conversation elsewhere, asking if there were other topics to discuss. Yet, the reporters remained fixated on Platner.
Eventually, when asked about the candidate for what felt like the fifth time, Schumer finally stated, “As I said, I support Graham Platner.” He concluded again with, “We’re going to defeat Susan Collins,” before departing.
Sunny Hostin’s Support Amid Criticism
Interestingly, alongside various scandals, Platner has generated considerable backlash due to his controversial campaigns, particularly for his “Totenkopf” references. Notably, he allegedly tattooed over a Nazi symbol.
In addition, his previously revealed vulgar Reddit comments under the pseudonym “P-Hustle” include deeply inappropriate jokes. These posts include references to public indecency and disparaging remarks about different demographics.
Declining Interviews Following Scandal
It seems Platner is keeping a low profile, as reports indicate he declined an interview with MS following recent controversies. There’s even an active Kik account tied to him, known for minimal identity checks. This profile features a revealing photo, but details about when it was taken remain unclear as his account dates back to 2016.
Schumer had initially supported Maine Democratic Governor Janet Mills in her bid against Collins. After Mills withdrew in April, citing financial barriers, Platner emerged as the front-runner for the Democratic primary.
