Cam Newton dampening enthusiasm for the Giants amid offseason buzz

Giants’ 2026 Offseason Signings Spark Mixed Reactions

The New York Giants made headlines by signing Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Braxton Berrios. But it seems, according to former NFL MVP Cam Newton, that this is 2026, not 2019.

On his show “4th&1,” Newton cautioned teams in the NFC East about players with strong personalities. He suggested that these signings could lead to a roster laden with big egos, humorously noting, “This team doesn’t lack egos… it sounds like a team full of huge celebrations.”

Beckham makes his return to the Giants after a series of stints with different franchises, the last being with the Miami Dolphins in 2024. During his earlier years in New York, he enjoyed notable success, including four seasons exceeding 1,000 yards receiving, despite a setback due to a serious ankle injury in 2021.

Newton mentioned, “Odell is not going back just to play a supporting role.” He believes Beckham still aims to be one of the top receivers in the league.

Meanwhile, Smith-Schuster adds an element of excitement. He had a strong start with 2,343 yards in his first two seasons but has since struggled, failing to surpass 400 yards since 2022 with the Chiefs. His antics, including dancing on logos and creating TikToks, were sometimes frowned upon, even by teammates.

Berrios, who has racked up 1,360 rushing yards in seven NFL years, gained attention recently due to his relationship with social media figure Alix Earle, though they parted ways in December 2025.

Newton also raised concerns about potential injury issues, given the Giants’ track record. He pointed out that many of their key players, like JuJu, Odell, and others, have faced long-term injuries. For instance, Jackson Dart, the sophomore quarterback, had concussions in half of his games last season, and both Malik Nabors and Skatebo had significant injuries.

Skatebo, who dislocated his ankle last year, is aiming for a Week 1 return and showcased his recovery with a backflip during an event. Nabors, on the other hand, had a more complicated injury that might delay his comeback.
