Exploring Affordable Options for the 2026 World Cup
If you’re a soccer fan wanting to catch the excitement of the World Cup without spending a fortune, it might be worth considering Guadalajara, Mexico. According to a report from Skyscanner, it emerges as the most budget-friendly city for the 2026 tournament, with an estimated three-night trip costing about $856 per person.
In contrast, Los Angeles takes the sixth spot overall and ranks fourth among U.S. cities, with average travel expenses reaching $1,272 per person. This might come as a surprise, considering LA is often viewed as one of America’s pricier destinations. Interestingly, Skyscanner also noted that one-way flights to LA during June and July are fairly reasonable, averaging around $162.
When it comes to costs, accommodations can really drive up the budget. Hotels in Los Angeles during the tournament are expected to average $316 a night, which can quickly add up, making a three-night stay more expensive than in many other host cities.
For those hoping to find more economical lodging, it’s advisable to consider areas outside of central Los Angeles, such as Pasadena, or even further out along public transit routes. Burbank, located about 12 miles north of downtown, also presents an attractive alternative, featuring its own hotels and dining options, often at better prices.
Interestingly, the affordable options don’t stop in Mexico. The San Francisco Bay Area ranks as the most cost-effective host city in the U.S. overall, coming in third with $1,045 per person. Houston follows closely at $1,056, while Dallas is just behind LA at $1,290.
On the other end of the spectrum, Atlanta holds the title for the highest average travel cost within the top 10, at $1,554 per person. With significant price hikes—up to 74.5% in some cases—during June and July, it significantly increases the overall expense for visitors.
Philadelphia and Kansas City follow as the ninth and eighth most costly locations, respectively, at $1,460 and $1,396. Across the 10 affordable host sites, costs ranged from Guadalajara’s $856 to Atlanta’s $1,554.
