Scott Bessent criticizes Democrat on IRS audit immunity: 'Lacking facts, full of empty talk'

Contentious Exchange Between Treasury Secretary and Congresswoman

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent found himself in a tense confrontation with Democratic Rep. Linda Sanchez from California during a hearing in the House Ways and Means Committee.

At the end of his remarks, Sanchez accused Bessent of being part of what she termed the corruption in the Trump administration, leading to a vociferous exchange.

She questioned Bessent about the decision that granted President Trump’s family full immunity from IRS audits. “Why allow President Trump and his family complete immunity from audit?” she demanded.

Bessent acknowledged the legal representation from the Department of Justice, saying, “You’re a lawyer, so you understand that the U.S. Treasury and Internal Revenue Service are represented by the Department of Justice and the acting attorney general.”

Sanchez quickly interrupted, insisting that Bessent was dodging her inquiries regarding the specifics of the exemption order, particularly about who counted as Trump’s family.

“Is it his children, in-laws, grandchildren, or second cousins?” she pressed. “Do you know the answer to that question, Secretary?”

In response, Bessent suggested that she contact the Department of Justice for answers, stating, “I am not the one running the Treasury Department or overseeing what is happening with the exemptions granted.”

“Neither do I,” he reiterated. “We will follow the instructions of our lawyers and adhere to the law.”

As their exchange continued, Sanchez expressed a hope that she could feel proud of her performance that day.

“Okay, I hope you get some social media clips,” Bessent quipped, perhaps dismissively.

Sanchez declared, “It’s safe to say this is probably the most corrupt Treasury Department in the history of our country!” to which Bessent strongly disagreed, stating, “That’s a slur!”

She highlighted the economic issues faced by Americans, arguing that under Trump’s administration, inflation was rising quicker than wages and gas prices were historically high due to the situation with Iran.

“No!” Bessent interjected, countering her claims.

“Grocery prices have surged by 3.2% over the past few years, largely due to President Trump’s tariffs,” she pressed on. “I don’t see how anyone could describe this as anything but a monumental failure of the Treasury.”

As her time lapsed, Bessent was permitted to respond once more.

“That senator is a slanderer. She has nothing but unsubstantiated opinions, and I will not stand for them!” he exclaimed.

Bessent insisted, “There’s no such thing as corruption. We operate at the highest level, and just because she provides me with facts that don’t align with her narrative—she’s, it seems, short on facts and long on hot air. I won’t tolerate that.”

He concluded, deeming Sanchez’s statements as shameful.

The IRS audit exemption order emerged from a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department in connection with a $20 billion case regarding leaked IRS documents.
