Fetterman's decline from a progressive favorite shows a change in the Democratic Party.

Fetterman’s Political Journey: A Shift in Party Dynamics

Back in 2016, while Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was working at a bar in Union Square, John Fetterman, then mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, was a notable supporter of Bernie Sanders. At that time, during his unsuccessful Senate bid, Fetterman was one of the original Bernie Brothers, emphasizing a progressive agenda in his endorsement video where he claimed to share a vision with Sanders.

Fast forward ten years, and while Fetterman seems to have remained consistent in his political beliefs, his party has undergone significant changes. Now serving as a Democratic U.S. senator, he finds himself somewhat isolated. Despite voting along party lines 91% of the time, he’s surprisingly rated more favorably by Republican voters—73% compared to just 22% among Democrats in Pennsylvania.

Internal Party Tensions

His stance has led to a sort of political ostracism within his own party. As Democrats in Pennsylvania consider the upcoming 2028 primary, speculation arises around Fetterman potentially shifting allegiances, even though he dismisses such ideas, insisting his values remain unchanged.

On a different front, Ocasio-Cortez is currently gaining attention for her support of leftist candidates nationwide. Alongside Sanders, she’s been promoting their “War on the Oligarchies” tour, though reports suggest they’re using private jets and luxury cars to travel. Meanwhile, her name is increasingly mentioned among potential 2028 presidential candidates.

Fluctuating Political Narratives

How did both figures’ paths diverge so dramatically in just a decade? Fetterman’s actions offer some insight. He has voiced the importance of a secure southern border and critiqued his party’s automatic opposition to Trump, suggesting that even simple social interactions should not lead to hostility.

Moreover, Fetterman has been vocal in his strong support for Israel, particularly after the recent terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023. He has criticized what he perceives as a problematic alignment within his party with pro-Hamas sentiments.

The Democratic Divide

Conversely, Democrats like Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen urge a reconsideration of unwavering support for the Israeli government. The political landscape is rife with contradictions, exemplified by Sanders’ support for a controversial Maine senator, while Fetterman openly criticized the situation as “crazy,” highlighting the disconnect within party loyalties.

This reflects the larger challenge Fetterman faces. While he claims his beliefs haven’t changed, the Democratic Party’s values have certainly evolved.

Policy Shifts and Party Transformation

Examining the party’s policy trajectories reveals this shift. The once-essential $15 minimum wage push has given way to discussions about raising it to $30 by 2030. President Obama’s strong commitment to Israel has transformed into accusations of genocide against Israel from figures like Sanders. Furthermore, the previous support for fracking during Obama’s administration has met resistance from Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal approach, which calls for a move away from fossil fuels.

In a time when many Sanders supporters aligned with Clinton, Fetterman has become increasingly marginalized. Today’s Democratic primary voters appear more aligned with Ocasio-Cortez’s “tax the rich” philosophy, leaving Fetterman’s more moderate take in the backdrop.

As the party continues its leftward shift, the common ground Fetterman once had seems to diminish, raising questions about his future and the broader direction of the Democratic Party.
