Contract Negotiations Between Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield

While a deadlock hasn’t truly occurred yet, it’s clear that discussions around a contract between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield aren’t progressing smoothly. On Friday, Mayfield himself communicated to local media that the two parties were “not close” to an agreement, which doesn’t bode well.

The complexity of Mayfield’s situation stems from the ambiguity regarding the Buccaneers’ direction. They ought to secure a quarterback for the long term; however, extending Mayfield’s contract is a significant decision for the franchise. It’s complicated further by the fact that the current management might change after this season. There’s a possibility that Mayfield could become a player like Sam Darnold, who has the potential to lead the team to a Super Bowl, or he might end up as a player like Tua Tagovailoa, who has had only fleeting success.

The Buccaneers are in a curious spot within the NFL. They do have considerable talent across the roster, but when it comes to elite offensive players, they seem to be lacking after Mike Evans left in free agency. This has made predicting Mayfield’s future more complicated. Although he’s made two Pro Bowl appearances, visible regression in his performance in 2025 raises concerns, especially with Evans no longer stretching the field for him.

It questions whether Mayfield’s recent success is due to a talented offensive coordinator and supporting cast, rather than his individual skill. This poses a risk when discussing high-value contracts, and the uncertainty around coaching stability aggravates the situation.

Everyone knows that Todd Bowles is likely on his way out, and this isn’t even a secret anymore. The Buccaneers seem hesitant to pursue a new head coach, possibly due to concerns about attracting better talent. Rumors suggest they’re looking ahead to 2027, possibly eyeing Mike Tomlin as a future head coach.

Add to this that general manager Jason Licht’s position isn’t guaranteed for next season either. For the Buccaneers to justify his stay, they need to clinch a playoff spot. Yet, their performance has stagnated recently as competition in the division ramps up. So, while they could emerge at the top or even fall to third, who knows what will actually happen?

If you’re in charge of the organization, there’s an overarching uncertainty loomed over Mayfield’s potential extension. A lack of cohesive strategy often hinders player development. If Tampa Bay decides to extend Mayfield’s contract but fires Bowles and Licht this year, the next coach and GM will inherit a cumbersome situation—lots of guaranteed money tied to a mid-tier quarterback past 30. Age doesn’t hinder Mayfield as much physically, but his position in the league isn’t quite secure, especially with a history of taking hits.

Mayfield’s current contract lasts through 2026, making the decision to keep him seem reasonable. He’s clearly vying for a new deal, but too many uncertainties linger about his capability without Evans and the overarching direction of the franchise. This could trap them into a massive commitment that doesn’t pay off. If only he hadn’t regressed in 2025, this would be a much clearer call.

The silver lining for Buccaneers fans is that the organization appears to be avoiding hasty decisions and is opting to pay Baker. This transition will be crucial, potentially defining the team for the next few years.
