Brendan Banfield given life sentence for murdering his wife to conceal affair with au pair

Brendan Banfield trial centers on nanny involvement in Virginia murder case

Virginia Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Double Murder

A man from Virginia received a life sentence without the chance of parole on Friday after being convicted of murdering his wife and another man. The crimes were committed to cover up an affair with the family’s Brazilian au pair.

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, was found guilty earlier this year of two counts of aggravated murder, possession of a firearm during a crime, and child endangerment. These charges stemmed from the 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan in their home in Herndon, Virginia.

Meanwhile, Juliana Pérez Magalhães, the au pair involved in the case, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to ten years in prison for her part in the events that led to the murders.

During sentencing, Judge Penny Azcarate expressed her disbelief at the brutality of the crimes, stating, “The level of brutality, calculation, and inhumanity reflects something much deeper than anger or impulse; it reflects evil.” She had no hesitation in sentencing Banfield to life behind bars.

Banfield, addressing the court before his sentence was announced, maintained his innocence and took a defiant stance. He remarked that he was “very disappointed in the legal system,” claiming that authorities didn’t adequately investigate Ryan’s death.

Family members of the victims also spoke during the proceedings. Christine’s sister Danielle described how Banfield could have chosen a different path, saying, “He could have divorced and moved on, but divorce requires letting go of control, and control always took precedence.” She emphasized that Banfield’s actions stemmed not from love, but from a desire for power and deception.

Ryan’s mother, Deirdre Fisher, addressed Banfield directly, recalling her son’s humanity, saying, “Joe wasn’t just a throwaway caricature. He had a face, he had a name, he had a life. But Brendan Banfield shot him in the face, sullied his name.” It’s hard not to feel the weight of loss from such strong words.

Prosecutors shared details of a complex plan orchestrated by Banfield and Magalhães to lure Ryan to their home under false pretenses. They posed as Christine on a fetish site, aiming to disguise the murders as a home invasion. During the trial, testimonies revealed that after shooting Ryan, Banfield fatally stabbed his wife with a knife Ryan had brought along.

In her closing remarks, the judge underscored the deliberate and selfish nature of Banfield’s actions. “Your actions showed a gross disregard for human life,” she stated. “You deserve nothing more than a life in prison and a life of repentance for what you did to your victims and their families.” It’s a haunting reminder of the impact of violence on so many lives.
