Brazil’s Unique Send-off for Their Soccer Team

In an intriguing display of national spirit, Brazil recently honored its soccer team as they prepared to head off to the World Cup, set to take place across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Brazilians gathered at Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport to witness a heartfelt blessing and ceremony, resembling a baptism, as the team departed.

It was reported by ESPN that two fire engines greeted the team’s aircraft, showering it with water jets in a celebratory gesture before it took off. The spectacle was, perhaps, a fitting tribute to the importance of soccer in Brazilian culture.

Catholicism plays a significant role in Brazil—widely recognized as home to the largest Catholic population globally. Around 182 million individuals identify as Catholic, which, according to Premier Christian News, accounts for approximately 13% of the world’s total Catholic community.

The team boasts notable players, including Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker and his former colleague Roberto Firmino.

Prior to the ceremonial water spray, airport officials secured permission from the Brazilian Football Federation for the blessing of the Boeing 767-300ER, emphasizing the importance of this event to the nation.

International outlets like Marca highlight the significance of such rituals for the Brazilian people, suggesting that this “baptism” before major flights is a tradition that symbolizes the collective aspiration to reclaim the World Cup trophy.

Brazil holds the record for the most World Cup victories, having won five times, while both Germany and Italy have four titles each. Interestingly, Brazil is the only nation that has participated in every World Cup since it first began in 1930.

This isn’t a novel gesture for Brazilians; in the past, they’ve given similar royal treatments to their planes for important tournaments. In 2022, another Boeing was decorated to mark the tournament.

The plane designated for the 2026 team, adorned with the Brazilian soccer logo, is reportedly valued at $170 million. It’s worth noting that this aircraft was once used by the Rolling Stones during their 60th-anniversary tour in 2022.
