Mitchell Robinson's defense helps Knicks during NBA Finals Game 2

SAN ANTONIO — Here’s why.

The spotlight has been on Mitchell Robinson lately, especially regarding his injury. I can’t help but feel a sense of concern for his well-being. It’s crucial that we keep him healthy as the season progresses.

This game was pivotal, maybe a defining moment. Everyone recognized that his presence was vital.

When Jalen Brunson sank a free throw, the Knicks pulled ahead by a single point, prompting the Spurs to call a timeout with just 7.5 seconds remaining.

It was obvious who would take the last shot: Victor Wembanyama. Just as clear was who the Knicks relied on to defend that shot: Robinson.

De’Aaron Fox received the inbounds pass. Wembanyama set a screen, then received the ball back, poised to shoot from about 20 feet out.

But Robinson made a crucial play, managing to block the shot and forcing the towering Wembanyama to adjust. The shot hit the rim and allowed the Knicks to snag a 105-104 win against the Spurs in Game 2 of the Finals, giving them a 2-0 series lead.

You know, Wembanyama had a moment earlier in the game where he mishandled the ball, and it was Robinson who capitalized on it.

Coach Mike Brown praised Wembanyama, saying, “He’s iconic. There’s no one else like him. He can score in so many ways and thrives with the ball. We had crucial possessions towards the end, so Mitch was assigned to guard him. What impressed me was how Mitch handled it. Wemby is incredible; you can’t just block his shots. You have to let him work while staying disciplined in your defense.”

Brown added that the teamwork was essential. “It began with Mitch and involved everyone else ensuring they boxed out effectively. His ability to defend such a prominent player in those key moments was impressive.”

Robinson had previously undergone surgery to fix a fractured fifth metacarpal sustained before the Finals. There were doubts about his ability to participate and contribute at a high level.

Yet, he proved to be a game-changer during the critical defensive plays.

Robinson reflected on his mindset, saying, “I knew I had to step up and I had a few fouls early on, maybe three. So my focus was on defending smartly without fouling. It was an amazing game, and that’s just how it unfolded.”

Being the longest-tenured Knick, Robinson has seen the evolution of the team, and now, on this significant platform, he’s made a remarkable impact.

He shared, “It’s surreal. I’ve been here for eight years, and now, look where we are—playing in the Finals. I can honestly say I’ve witnessed so much. It’s incredible.”
