Kyra Sedgwick Reflects on Family Legacy Ahead of Independence Anniversary
Kyra Sedgwick recently opened up about the significance of the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, sharing a personal connection to the event. The actress, now 60, disclosed that one of her ancestors was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence, which she finds to be deeply meaningful.
“As an American, democracy holds a lot of weight for me,” she explained. “The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are foundational, and I consider it both an honor and a responsibility.” She mentioned William Ellery, her ancestor, highlighting that the individuals involved in drafting such important documents were remarkable figures.
During her appearance, Sedgwick promoted her new film, “Carolina,” where she portrays a character struggling with alcoholism.
Kevin Bacon’s School Days and Family Choices
In a separate discussion, Kevin Bacon revealed feelings of inadequacy during his school years. He described his teenage self as a “dumbbell” before discovering his passion for acting. Bacon met Sedgwick on the set of the soap opera “Another World,” and the couple’s romantic journey began in the late 1980s.
Reflecting on their first dinner date, Sedgwick recounted a moment that captured Bacon’s heart. “I opened the menu and exclaimed about the high prices, and he just—well, he fell for me right then,” she laughed, recalling how shocked she was at the cost of the meal.
The pair dated for several years before tying the knot in 1988 and raising two children, Travis and Sosie.
Maintaining Family Privacy
In an April 2025 episode of “Last Meals,” Bacon discussed his and Sedgwick’s decision to keep their children away from the public eye during their upbringing. He expressed a desire to let his kids choose whether or not to embrace fame, acknowledging the unique challenges that come with it.
“We didn’t take them to premieres or highlight our fame in their lives. We were trying to protect them from the strangeness of this world,” Bacon stated. “Still, it’s a tricky balance—sometimes I wish we could have shared more with them.” Despite their protective approach, their children have chosen to step into the spotlight later on.
Travis is now the lead singer of the band CONTRACULT Collective, while Sosie has followed in her parents’ footsteps as an actress, appearing in series like “Mares of Easttown” and “13 Reasons Why.” They’ve both accompanied their parents at various events through the years.
Bacon concluded, “I wanted my kids to manage their own paths. We’ve always encouraged them to talk about their feelings, especially if they found this lifestyle challenging.” He acknowledged that while they may not express it, they certainly faced difficulties growing up with parents in the spotlight.
