Yankees’ Catching Situation in Flux
This season, the Yankees’ catching roster has faced numerous challenges, and recent changes have added even more uncertainty.
In just one day, the Yankees shifted from sending J.C. Escala down to Triple-A and calling up Ali Sanchez, to placing Austin Wells on the injured list due to a “neck headache” right before Saturday’s matchup with the Red Sox. They also reactivated Escala.
When Aaron Boone briefed the media two and a half hours before Saturday’s game, there were no indications that Wells was experiencing any physical issues aside from his ongoing struggles at the plate throughout the season.
On Saturday night, Sanchez was in the starting lineup, yet it was assumed that was simply because the Red Sox were starting lefty Ranger Suarez.
Now, the Yankees find themselves needing to balance the workload between Sanchez and Escala while Wells, who had been behind the plate for 45 of the Yankees’ 63 games prior to Saturday, is sidelined for at least 10 days.
Had the Yankees recognized that Wells’ injury was serious enough to necessitate an IL stint, they likely wouldn’t have informed Escala the previous night about his demotion.
Boone commented on the situation, acknowledging, “With our catchers struggling a bit offensively, we saw an opportunity for Ali to join us and give JC a chance to play more regularly.”
He added, “There are adjustments Ali has been focusing on that I truly believe in. He’s already proving himself defensively, but we expect he can also add something on offense. Regular opportunities should help, and we hope Ali can inject some energy into the lineup as well.”
