Filmmakers Capture Footage of Mysterious Lake Creature
Two filmmakers claim to have captured remarkable footage of a creature often likened to America’s Loch Ness Monster.
Richard Rossi and Kelly Taber were working on a children’s film about Champ, a legendary serpent-like being rumored to reside in Lake Champlain—a lake that stretches 195 miles across upstate New York, Vermont, and parts of Quebec.
While editing footage two years after filming, they noticed something swimming behind their small boat, leading them to believe it could be evidence of Champ’s existence.
“When I saw it, it was like my neck got thinner, and my body got bigger,” Taber recalled. “Its thin neck appeared to be moving back and forth, almost like it was skimming under the surface, and its eyes looked like they were bulging.”
Rossi expressed her surprise when Taber called her to review the video from their movie “Lucy and the Lake Monster.”
The video gained traction, catching the attention of the History Channel’s popular series “The UnXplained,” with producers stating it might be the best visual proof of Champ since the famous 1977 photograph.
Rossi noted the significance of the video because it shows the creature next to an 11-foot-tall boat, giving it scale.
Champ, often likened to the Loch Ness Monster, has a long history of sightings, with one of the first records dating back to 1819 when Captain Crum reputedly encountered a creature measuring 187 feet long, claiming it had the head of a seahorse.
In 1873, the New York Times reported on a railroad crew that spotted a “giant serpent” in the lake, which led showman P.T. Barnum to offer a $50,000 reward for the creature to feature in his circus.
Reports of Champ have continued through the years, including state legislators in New York and Vermont claiming sightings in the 1980s, which resulted in a resolution to protect Champ—just in case it actually exists.
Taber, who grew up near Port Henry, New York, described her own early experiences with Champ, stating that many claimed to have seen it in that area. She recounted sitting on her parents’ lakeside porch, scanning the lake for signs of the creature.
“One time, there was a loud commotion not far from our front door,” she shared. “The wake wasn’t coming from either side, rather it was a straight path, at least an inch high, moving directly towards us.”
Suddenly, she noted, the direction shifted. “It came right towards the cabin and turned 90 degrees,” she continued, emphasizing that whatever it was, it never surfaced.
“I want to believe I felt the effects of Champ,” she concluded.
