A manager at a McDonald’s in Yuba City was admitted to the ICU with serious burns following an incident where a co-worker reportedly poured hot oil over him after their shift.
Jacob Smith, who is 20 years old, incurred third-degree burns affecting his face, neck, hands, and shoulders, and he is currently receiving specialized care at UC Davis Medical Center.
The alleged incident took place on May 30, when 23-year-old Jalani Blewett supposedly attacked Smith with hot oil. Following the incident, Blewett went missing but was apprehended by authorities after a few days.
Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, shared that her son, a dedicated restaurant manager, has been striving to establish a stable life for himself. Despite enduring significant pain, he has surprisingly maintained a positive outlook during this challenging time.
“My son has a wonderful spirit, always trying to uplift us even in this difficult situation,” said Amber Smith, who expressed deep gratitude for the community’s overwhelming support as her son continues his recovery. They’ve also initiated a fundraising campaign to assist with medical expenses.
Next week, Jacob is expected to have further surgeries, including skin grafts, which adds to his family’s concerns. Amber reflected on the painful moment when Jacob questioned her, saying, “Why are you doing this to me?” She is focused on ensuring he doesn’t stress over finances while he heals.
Currently, Blewett is being held in Sutter County Jail and faces charges of battery causing serious bodily injury.
