Idris Elba Addresses James Bond Rumors
Idris Elba has put an end to speculation about a black James Bond, clearly stating he doesn’t believe the character should be reimagined. In a recent interview with British GQ, published on June 8, Elba expressed his exasperation over the persistent rumors regarding him taking on the iconic role.
“It was never legit,” he remarked, dismissing the ongoing discourse as merely gossip. “It was always just a rumor.” He elaborated, saying, “I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing.”
Despite being synonymous with these rumors, Elba reiterated that the character of Bond was created for specific reasons. “James Bond was written how he was written for a reason,” he noted. He also acknowledged that certain audiences might not embrace the idea of a black male, particularly from Africa, representing Bond.
“Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period,” he added, giving a nod to the complexities of global market preferences.
Touching on the character’s essence, Elba expressed that there’s no need to change this particular piece of pop culture. “Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” he advised. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”
While Elba is known for portraying heroic characters, he made it clear that this specific role isn’t meant for him. The upcoming Bond film is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, with sources indicating that British actor Tom Francis has already auditioned for the role. Other potential candidates reportedly include Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner.
