Fatal crash claims lives of 5 teenagers in Santa Barbara County as police disclose heartbreaking reason

Tragic Weekend Crash Takes Lives of Five Teenagers in Santa Maria

Over the weekend in Santa Barbara County, a speeding vehicle collided with a traffic pole, resulting in the deaths of five teenagers and leaving one in serious condition. This unfortunate incident is being investigated as a possible drunken driving case.

The crash, which reverberated loudly through the usually quiet town of Santa Maria, occurred early Sunday morning. While the exact cause is still under investigation, initial evidence points towards alcohol as a possible factor.

Juana Galvez, the mother of 17-year-old Yusbeli “Ava” Diaz, a student at Pioneer Valley High School, expressed her family’s deep sorrow. “There are no words that can fully express the heartbreak that our family is experiencing,” she stated.

Galvez shared on Facebook that Ava was taken to the hospital, where she fought for her life for about an hour before sadly passing away due to her injuries. Describing her daughter, she noted that Ava was a loving and kind individual who brought joy to everyone around her.

Another victim of the accident was identified as 16-year-old Isabella “Bella” Vigil. In a heartfelt post on a fundraising page, her relative Angela Vigil expressed, “We share with sadness the tragic and unexpected loss of our beloved Bella, who passed away at just 16 years old in a tragic car accident.”

Representatives from the Santa Maria School District confirmed that while Ava attended Pioneer Valley High School, Bella was enrolled at Santa Maria High School. Additionally, one of the casualties was a former student from Pioneer Valley who was part of a continuation program.

Kenny Klein, a spokesperson for the district, mentioned that none of the deceased students were set to graduate this week, and counseling services would be available to support their friends and family during this difficult time. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and school community,” he said.

A fourth student who tragically lost their life attended Maple Continuation High School in the Lompoc Unified School District.

A poignant makeshift shrine has been established at the crash site, located at the intersection of South Broadway and Miller Street. Mourners have started gathering there, leaving flowers, balloons, candles, and photographs as loving tributes to the teenagers who lost their lives. It seems like new items are being added day by day, a testament to the impact these young lives had on their community.

The Santa Maria Police Department continues to investigate the details surrounding this tragic incident.
