Alabama Rep. Terry Sewell Criticizes GOP Investigation into Democratic Fundraising
On Wednesday afternoon, Alabama Representative Terry Sewell strongly criticized Republican attempts to probe into the funding mechanisms of the Democratic Party. She described the ongoing fraud investigation as yet another instance of Republican retaliation against Black women in positions of power.
“Time and again, the Justice Department under Donald Trump has targeted Black women with unfounded lawsuits,” Sewell remarked on Wednesday morning.
This criticism arises as Republican lawmakers are looking into ActBlue, which is a Democratic fundraising group, and its CEO, Regina Wallace Jones, over allegations of accepting illegal donations.
House Republicans are specifically questioning whether ActBlue misled them and dodged subpoenas to conceal issues in their review process intended to filter out illegal foreign contributions. They’re also demanding access to international communications related to the case.
Investigation into ActBlue Heightens Scrutiny
The inquiry follows a request from President Trump for an investigation into ActBlue. “Evidence suggests that foreign nationals are trying to misuse online fundraising platforms to unduly influence U.S. elections,” a White House press release stated.
Wallace-Jones has defended the organization, claiming that the investigation lacks merit and asserting that ActBlue maintains stringent oversight in its donation processing.
Context of the Investigation
In her statements to FOX News Digital, she noted that their approach includes multiple layers of checks to verify donors and their information. For instance, they require a card verification value (CVV) for donations, utilize IP addresses to track foreign contributions, and implement address verification systems, alongside manually reviewing donations.
Sewell views the investigation as connected to broader patterns of harassment directed at Black women associated with Trump. “This is yet another example of how the Republicans and Trump leverage the presidency to harass those who challenge them. The Trump Justice Department seems to be wielding its power to intimidate communities of color, particularly Black Americans,” she emphasized.
Concerns Over Patterns of Harassment
She also referenced other instances of harassment involving prominent Black women, including Federal Reserve Board Member Lisa Cook and New York Attorney General Tish James. “It’s clear that this Republican-led committee is now targeting ActBlue and its CEO, Ms. Wallace-Jones,” Sewell concluded.
